Leading in a Family Environment

When most people start a new job, they go in feeling like an outsider. Unsure of management styles or best practices, they don’t immediately feel like part of the organization–let alone part of a family. At Singh, you’re part of the family from day one.

Wendy Jacoby knows this from experience. Since July of 2004–when she started as a leasing consultant at MainCentre–Wendy has been a vital part of the Singh family. Since her time at MainCentre, Wendy has moved up through the ranks to become a site manager at the Brownstones. Some things that haven’t changed, and the reasons she keeps coming back day after day, is her love of the company, the people she works with, and the knowledge she continually gains.

We sat down with Wendy to find out what she likes most about being part of the Singh family, what kind of leader she is, and the best parts of being a leader at Singh. Here’s what she had to say!

What do you do?

As a Site Manager, I deal with staff, vendors, and residents. We try our best to satisfy all of our residents needs, but if there ever is an issue, I’m the first point of contact to resolve it or answer questions. As the Site Manager, I make sure the property is operating day to day – like getting roads cleared and sidewalks shoveled in the winter or making sure the pool is open and the landscaping is taken care of in the summer.

 Why work at Singh?

Singh, in this area, is very well-known and recognized. We are a leader in property management, homes, and senior living communities. Even though Singh has grown to be a fairly large company, it’s still very family oriented. It’s easy to reach out to ownership and talk to them and know that your voice is being heard. We’re an established company that still has those family values.

What does leadership mean to you?

Leadership means being somebody that others can look up to, somebody who is going to give you guidance, feedback, and the proper tools and training to make the surrounding team effective. Being a leader, you have to be dependable and responsible with a high moral character.

How do you lead?

I believe in leading by example. I really think my team respects me because they know that I’m never asking them to do anything unreasonable or anything that I wouldn’t do myself. I utilize other people’s experience and guidance to ensure that the whole team works well together.

What’s the best part of being a leader at Singh?

One of the best parts of being a leader at Singh is getting the support you need from upper management. As a whole, Singh is very family oriented, especially at the sites because you’re with the same people for 40 hours a week. You spend more time with the people you’re working with than you do at home, so it’s nice to work in an environment like that. We like to have fun, but we’re also here to accomplish goals, so it’s a good balance of everything.

Why does Singh’s reputation make you proud to be part of the family?

We have a lot of people who come from competitors, complaining about the other properties and their maintenance staff, or how they felt the management didn’t care about them. Singh is a really good example of a company that cares about the residents and their own people. It’s especially nice when you start as a Leasing Consultant because you want to really believe in the product that you’re selling. The product that Singh has and the communities that we have are definitely something to be proud of.  You could work at any Singh community and the experience we give is always the same.

What does integrity mean to you and why is it important for leadership?

To me, integrity means you can be counted on; whether that be taking care of residents or being here to support the staff. Integrity is really something that I use every day. I want the respect of the people around me, and to really get their respect you have to be respectful to everyone; residents and Singh team members. I don’t think you can be leader if you don’t have integrity. People won’t be effective if they can’t look to their leader for the guidance and support that they need.

How does the Singh culture make you feel like part of the family?

When I started, at any point along the way, I don’t think there was anyone that I couldn’t reach out to. Whether it be maintenance at another propertyor any other team member; everybody is approachable. Everyone I’ve worked with is someone that I know can offer me the valuable insight, knowledge, and experience to help me be a better team member.

Describe the ideal candidate to join the Singh family.

I think some things can be taught, but one thing that can’t is how you treat people. Being friendly, considerate, and offering excellent customer service to everybody–whether it’s your coworker, contractor, resident, or a prospect that’s coming into our community for the first time–are all extremely valuable characteristics.
