Shuvayi Vereen is a Med Tech Mentor and a Supervisor in Charge at Waltonwood Cary Parkway. She started her career at Waltonwood six years ago as a part-time employee. After a couple years, Shuvayi made the decision to become full-time. A few months later, she became a Mentor. 

How does it feel to be able to move up in the company? 

To me, it shows how Singh takes employees and treats them like family. They try to keep everything within the family. You can advance as much as you want. They have the support where they can hold your hand and help you to be whatever you want to be. As long as you’re willing to learn every day, you can succeed at Singh. 

I’ve worked in nursing homes and assisted living where I hadn’t advanced from where I wastarted. What I like about Singh is they like to promote from within before going to the outside. That’s what makes it a great place to work. 

Did you receive encouragement from your supervisors to move up? 

The mentor position was recommended by one of my supervisors. They kept telling me I had the qualities to be a mentor. I told her I didn’t think I could handle that position to train people and lead them the right way. Eventually I thought, “ Iif they think I can, maybe I can.” So, to me, they believed in me before I believed in myself.  

What do you think are important qualities for Medical Technicians or Caregivers to have? 

I think they should have an open mind and have the love and heart to take care of the elderly. You have to love our residents. You need to have a listening ear. You can’t come to Singh just because you want to make money. You come because you love to do the job.  

What else makes Singh different from other places you’ve worked? 

The management is very easy to talk to. They have an open–door policy. If I have a problem, I can walk into their office and they will listen. I like that we all come together as a family and discuss things. It’s a comfortable place to be. I’ve never felt this way at a job.  

Sometimes you find someone that is new and they’re quiet and not sure what to do.  From the moment we meet them, we want them to feel welcome and comfortable here.
